Spire Receives $599,793 Contract For Crew Cerebral Oxygen Monitor

Spire Corporation says it's received a two-year SBIR Phase II contract for $599,793 from NASA to develop an optical system for monitoring the cerebral blood oxygenation level of astronauts to monitor their state of consciousness during space missions.

During this phase of the contract, an operational system will be built based upon the Phase I results, which successfully demonstrated the ability to see oxygen at the levels required using diode laser and sensor detection techniques.

"This contract will enable us to develop instruments that not only monitor the state of consciousness of astronauts but of others who require continuous alertness, such as operators of trucks or heavy equipment as well as those involved in critical military or medical operations," said Spire CEO Roger G. Little.
