NTSB Prelim: Cessna 150M

Pilot Established Best Glide Speed And Attempted A Soft-Field Landing To A Corn Field

Location: Wadsworth, OH Accident Number: CEN21LA381
Date & Time: August 11, 2021, 10:00 Local Registration: N66748
Aircraft: Cessna 150M Injuries: 2 None
Flight Conducted Under: Part 91: General aviation - Personal

On August 11, 2021, about 1000 eastern daylight time, a Cessna 150M, N66748 sustained substantial damage when it was involved in an accident near Wadsworth, Ohio. The pilot and passenger were uninjured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.

The pilot reported that after she taxied to runway 21, she utilized the airplane’s checklist and performed an engine run-up, which included checking the magnetos and carburetor heat. After waiting for an arriving airplane to land, she taxied into position on the runway, held the brakes and advanced the throttle to full power before releasing the brakes to initiate the takeoff. She stated that shortly after takeoff, she noticed the airplane was not climbing normally and the stall warning horn activated. She then noticed the RPM rapidly decreased from 2500 to 1500. The pilot established best glide speed and attempted a soft-field landing to a corn field. After touchdown, the airplane nosed over, and the fuselage, vertical stabilizer, and rudder sustained substantial damage.

A detailed engine examination is pending.
