First awarded in 1936, the trophy is given yearly by the Honorable Company of Air Pilots, formerly the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators. Sarah Tamar, CFI, Chosen for Educational Assistance

Sarah Tamar, a Caravan seaplane pilot for Tailwind Air in New York City, is the 6th annual recipient of the WAI / Martha King Scholarship for Female Flight Instructors. Prior to winning this year’s Women in Aviation assistance, she worked at an advertising job in an office by New York’s East River, watching float planes come and go. She felt a calling then, saying “I didn’t know I was meant to fly, I didn’t know I had the potential to become a pilot. I didn’t know flying seaplanes for a living would become my life’s purpose.” All it took to spark the interest was a ride-along in a Cessna 172, and the passion for flight was sparked. 

45th Annual Women’s Race Open to All

Air Race Classic’s Board of Directors has announced the route for the upcoming 45th annual Air Race Classic. Kicking off at the home of Sun n’ Fun in Lakeland, Florida, the planned route will go on to stops at Moultrie, Georgia; Muscle Shoals, Alabama; Hattiesburg, Mississippi; Pine Bluff, Arkansas; Ada, Oklahoma; Lawrence, Kansas; Mt. Vernon, Illinois; Tullahoma, Tennessee; and a finish in Terre Haute, Indiana. The race begins June 21st, and registration opens on January 3, 2022.

Cooking Oil Turned Jet Fuel Coming to an Airbus Near You

The French Ministry of Transports and Safran have announced the first in-flight evaluation of a single-aisle aircraft running on 100% unblended sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The Testbed for the project, a single CFM LEAP-1A engine equipped on an Airbus A319neo, functioned well during its test flight over Toulouse, France. Initial results from its other ground and flight tests are expected in 2022 as the system moves towards certification.

Never Lifted Off Of The Ground And Impacted A Barbed Wire Fence At The End Of The Field

On October 18, 2021, about 1534 central daylight time, an AutoGyro Cavalon gyroplane, N419LB, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Stroud, Oklahoma. The pilot was fatally injured. The gyroplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. A witness reported that he observed the gyroplane on a 300-ft, private, upsloping field. The pilot added full power to the engine and the gyroplane started its takeoff roll toward the north. However, it never lifted off of the ground and impacted a barbed wire fence at the end of the field.

AD 2021-22-13 Requires Performing An RTC On Certain Part-Numbered Hoist Assemblies

The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for certain Leonardo S.p.a. Model AB139 and AW139 helicopters. This AD was prompted by the determination that the requirement to accomplish a rated load check (RTC) on certain hoist assemblies may have been inadvertently left out of some aircraft maintenance publications (AMPs). This AD requires performing an RTC on certain part-numbered hoist assemblies with certain part-numbered hoist cables installed and corrective actions if any discrepancies are found as specified in a European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) AD, which is incorporated by reference.
