It's good to be young... especially if you're heading to Oshkosh. Young people ages 18 and under will be admitted free to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2021, as a way to introduce more youth to the possibilities in the world of flight. The 68th Experimental Aircraft Association fly-in convention will be July 26-August 1 at Wittman Regional Airport. This effort is designed to encourage more aviation-minded families and their children to attend the event that brings more than 10,000 aircraft from around the world to Oshkosh each year.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command will conduct Falcon Virgo, a routine air defense exercise, on Monday, January 25, through Tuesday, January 26, between midnight and 5:30 a.m. EST each day in the National Capital Region. Aircraft participating in the flight exercise include Air Force F-16 aircraft, an Army UC-35A aircraft, a Navy King Air 300 aircraft, a Coast Guard MH-65D Dolphin helicopter, and Civil Air Patrol Cessna 182T general aviation aircraft. Augmented Power System Will Enhance Station’s Health, Capabilities

The International Space Station’s (ISS) growing research capabilities and commercial opportunities wiill be augmented with new solar arrays to increase the orbiting laboratory’s power supply. The modification to Boeing’s ISS sustainment contract with NASA calls for them to deliver six additional solar arrays to NASA for installation beginning in 2021. The new 63-foot-by-20-foot arrays will together produce more than 120 kilowatts of electricity from the sun’s energy, enough to power more than 40 average U.S. homes.

Eighth And Final Test Of The Green Run Series

NASA is targeting a two-hour test window that opens at 5 p.m. EST Saturday, Jan. 16, for the hot fire test of NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket core stage at the agency’s Stennis Space Center near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. The hot fire is the eighth and final test of the Green Run series to ensure the core stage of the SLS rocket is ready to launch Artemis missions to the Moon, beginning with Artemis I. The core stage includes the liquid hydrogen tank and liquid oxygen tank, four RS-25 engines, and the computers, electronics, and avionics that serve as the “brains” of the rocket.

Pilot... Had Recently Purchased The Glider

On August 7, 2020 about 1400 Pacific daylight time, a Sportine Aviacija Lak-17B, motorized glider, N290MH, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Lake Port, California. The private pilot was fatally injured. The motorized glider was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. The flight departed from runway 28 at Lampson Field Airport (1O2), Lakeport, California about 1200 on a local flight. According to family members, the pilot was based out of 1O2 and had recently purchased the glider.

AD 2020-26-16 Was Prompted By A Report Of A Wing Separation

The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for certain Piper Aircraft, Inc. (Piper) Models PA-28-151, PA-28-161, PA-28-181, PA-28-235, PA-28R-180, PA-28R-200, PA28R-201, PA-28R-201T, PA-28RT-201, PA-28RT-201T, PA-32-260, PA-32-300, PA-32R-300, PA32RT-300, and PA-32RT-300T airplanes. This AD was prompted by a report of a wing separation caused by fatigue cracking in a visually inaccessible area of the lower main wing spar cap. This AD requires calculating the factored service hours for each main wing spar to determine when an inspection is required, inspecting the lower main wing spar bolt holes for cracks, and replacing any cracked main wing spar. Hold-In-Lieu Of Procedure Turn A hold-in-lieu of procedure turn shall be established over a final or intermediate fix when an approach can be made from a properly aligned holding pattern. The hold-in-lieu of procedure turn permits the pilot to align with the final or intermediate segment of the approach and/or descend in the holding pattern to an altitude that will permit a normal descent to the final approach fix altitude.
