ICARUS Devices See Use in USAF Training

View-Limiting Shield Enjoyed at CAE's Dothan Training Center

ICARUS Devices highlighted the fact that CAE will utilize the Instrument Conditions Awareness Recognition and Understanding System (ICARUS) in training to support its own contract teaching the USAF Rotary Wing - Introductory Flight Training program (IFT-R).

The "full-spectrum Inadvertent Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IIMC) awareness solution" offers a more polished version of the good old "duct tape over safety glasses" system, offering students a wearable shield that can be optionally activated at their instructor's discretion. The system improves the training process by reinforcing the idea that IFR conditions can sneak up on a pilot, something a bit harder to impose when the controls must be handed off to don the foggles. Of course, the fancy system comes at a much higher pricepoint than a pair of Harbor Freight glasses: A full carbon fiber visor sits on their site at a wince-inducing $1,250.

"A full-spectrum Inadvertent Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IIMC) awareness solution enhances critical training, like upset prevention and recovery training,” said IFT-R Program Manager Dr. John Bentley, CAE Defense & Security. “Leveraging the capability during introductory training allows students to refine abilities to overcome spatial disorientation and learn to trust the instrumentation."
