FAA Investigating Near Collision At Westchester County, NY, Airport

Two GA Airplanes Nearly Collided Operating From Intersecting Runways

The FAA has opened and investigation into a near collision involving two GA aircraft at Westchester County Airport (KHPN) in Westchester County, NY, last Sunday. The airplanes were using intersecting runways at the time the incident occurred.

According to the Journal News newspaper, the FAA told county officials that one single-engine airplane landed before a departing aircraft had cleared the intersection of the two runways. “In this specific situation, FAA procedures require that the departing aircraft be through the intersection before the arriving aircraft reaches the runway,” the agency said in a statement.

The investigation is ongoing. The FAA told the county that “facility managers will share the preliminary findings of the incident with all personnel for situational awareness, and will review the procedures involved to ensure a safe operating environment.”

The paper reports that the county was only notified of the investigation on Thursday.
