RRL Announces Presence Loudly At AirVenture 2008

Taxi Tests Light Up Evening Sky

If there's anyone left who isn't sure the Rocket Racing League will be fun to watch, they weren't at Wittman Regional Airport at dusk on Saturday night.

The Rocket Racing demonstrator was out to do some taxi testing on the field. The crew needed to make sure everything held together during shipping before Tuesday's public demo at Oshkosh, and FAA required that the tests be held until after 8:00 pm when the field closed.

The Bridenstine DKNY Rocket Racer did two three-second tests, and one longer burn of about 5 seconds. All we can say is it might be even louder than the Harriers, it's going to be very fun to watch... and, given the dramatic kerosene/liquid-oxygen flame, they'll be nuts if they don't schedule some night events.

Adam Smith, EAA’s vice president of membership and AirVenture director of aircraft attractions, summed up EAA's excitement to host the public introduction of the RRL.

"This is an entirely new facet of flight, and where better to unveil it than in front of the world’s most diverse gathering of aviation enthusiasts," Smith said.

Demonstration flights are scheduled for Tuesday, Friday and Saturday at AirVenture.
