Extra 300 Makes Seal Beach Landing

Just Missed Sunbather On Rollout

A 1996 Extra 300L lost power while doing aerobatics near a California beach Friday, according to Dailybreeze.com.

The two-seat Extra (type shown at right) made an emergency landing near Seal Beach, police said. The passenger onboard the aircraft said he was given the flight as a birthday present. The pair had been doing acrobatics over the ocean and were on their way back to the Fullerton airport when the engine started sputtering.

The Extra glided down to the beach around 11 am between 12th and 13th streets, said Sgt. Bob Mullins of the Seal Beach Police Department.

The pilot landed with minor damage to the aerobatic plane, with no injuries or property damage to the occupants on the ground, according to Mullins.

One sunbather on the beach said she was listening to music with earplugs in... when she heard a loud noise, and opened her eyes just to see the plane's wing speed over her head.

Police indicated the beach was not crowded, which aided the aircraft in its landing.
