First Flight: Ae270 Conforming Prototype

Cabin-Class Cruiser Closer...

Ibis Aerospace flew its conforming prototype Ae270 Propjet for the first time on a crisp, sunny February 25. The fifth aircraft to be produced, hence its designation (serial number five), is the production conforming prototype Ae270. Serial number five’s maiden flight is a major milestone in the Ae270 Propjet’s development program. The latest design incorporates a number of enhancements over previously flown prototype aircraft and represents for Ibis confirmation of the Ae270 type certification schedule.

Number Five recorded nearly one hour in its logbook on its first flight. Flight test pilots commented that the airplane flew flawlessly. Such was expected since two previously-flown prototype aircraft are identical to Number Five in the design of their flight controls and aerodynamics. The major difference with the third flying prototype was the incorporation of a PT6-66A engine. Other enhancements included pilot-side EFIS provided by Chelton Systems. This system recently received FAA certification. The flight routine included gear cycling, steep banks and turns. A low-speed pass over the crowd was applauded, while climb and short field landing characteristics were also demonstrated. The pilots, both experienced fighter jet pilots, commented that no discrepancies were evidenced in the aircraft’s operation.

Big shots impressed

In attendance at this important event were many delegates and representatives from Ibis Aerospace and its partner companies. Ibis Aerospace is a joint venture company consisting of Aero Vodochody of the Czech Republic and AIDC of Taiwan. At the event, Aero Vodochody provided flight test support. This group is comprised of experienced personnel from the L-159 jet fighter trainer aircraft program. AIDC’s contributions to the program are investor as well as supplier of major airframe components including wing and windscreen frame.

On hand to view the flight demonstration were Aero Vodochody executives, and representatives from shareholder Boeing. The AIDC delegation included several board members and top-level staff including the company’s chairman. In addition, local vendors and supplier companies were present—many of which have contributed to the program’s success over its nearly six-year history.

Comments by AIDC Chairman, Yun-Dea Huang, included comparing the performance of the Ae270 to a jet aircraft. Chairman Huang is a two-star general and an experienced military fighter pilot. Aero Vodochody Chairman and CEO, Antonin Jakubse, added, “The Ae270 is truly an aircraft designed for a worldwide market. North America will certainly be important, similarly European operators will be attracted. We also expect this aircraft, with its many attractive features -- such as a large cabin and ruggedness -- to be operated in remote regions throughout Africa, Australasia and the Far East.”

Fast and capable...

The Ae270 Propjet is a large-cabin, pressurized aircraft designed to carry up to ten people (two crew plus eight passengers). It will cover stage lengths of up to 1,610 nautical miles with fuel reserves. The Ae270 can also be configured for bulk cargo. As a six- to seven-passenger executive transport, it provides ease of operation, safety, economy and comfort only available in larger, more expensive aircraft. The Ae270 Propjet is redefining mission capability and economics of general aviation aircraft for today’s travel needs.

Certification expected this year

FAA certification of the Ae270 is scheduled at the end of 2003. First deliveries will take place in the first quarter of 2004. The Ae270 is being certified for FAR 23 single pilot operation and will be eligible for FAR Part 135 operation.
