NBAA Honors Rep. Mica With American Spirit Award

Commends Other Local Figures for Support of 2005 Convention

The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) has honored Rep. John Mica (R-7-FL) with the American Spirit Award for his support of business aviation and his work to help the Association move its Annual Meeting & Convention from hurricane-stricken New Orleans, LA, to Orlando.

“Perhaps no one more clearly exemplified Orlando’s commitment to supporting our Convention than Congressman John Mica,” NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen said. “He has built a record of proven leadership on aviation policy, including a record of effectiveness for the business aviation community, and that continued with his support for our Convention.

“When NBAA needed assistance in moving this year’s Convention from New Orleans to Orlando, Congressman Mica and his staff went beyond all expectations to help us with the relocation,” Bolen continued.

“He proved an invaluable advocate and resource. NBAA is pleased to present Chairman Mica with the American Spirit Award.”

In its 10-year history, the American Spirit Award has recognized individuals who exemplify excellence in service to others. As chairman of the House Aviation Subcommittee for the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Mica has championed many aviation policy initiatives. His successful effort to secure federal funding for airport maintenance and improvement projects has provided assistance for airports across the country, including those utilized by the business aviation community.

Also recognized for their support of the Convention were:

  • Jeffrey Fuqua, Chairman, Greater Orlando Aviation Authority;
  • Bill Peeper, President, Orlando/Orange County Convention & Visitors Bureau;
  • Tom Ackert, Executive Director, Orange County Convention Center;
  • Jim Atchison, General Manager of Sea World Orlando, and;
  • Bob Showalter of Showalter Flying Services, Orlando Executive Airport.

“NBAA thanks Chairman Mica and these other community leaders for their outstanding work to make this year’s Convention a success,” Bolen concluded. “We applaud their efforts, and we look forward to working with them when the Convention returns to Orlando next year.”
