Plane, Cell Phone Found In Lake Michigan

But Still No Sign Of Young Pilot

A diver working in Lake Michigan, about eight miles offshore from Cudahy, WI, said Friday that he'd found the PA-28 flown by bible college student Jonathan Leber -- as well as the cell phone on which he told a 911 dispatcher "I need help really fast.... I'm in Michigan, Lake Michigan." But there was no sign of Leber himself.

As ANN reported earlier this week, elements of the US Canadian Coast Guards called off the search for Leber, having found neither the college student nor his plane.

The diver, Jerry Guyer, said he got the location where Leber's plane disappeared from radar Monday night. Guyer, who owns the Pirate's Cove dive company, said he used sonar to locate the wreckage of the aircraft. Later in the day, he dove into the 41F water and found the Piper Archer. The pilot's door was open. The cell phone lay next to the aircraft on the lake floor, about 80-feet under the surface.

Guyer said, since Leber has been declared dead by the US Coast Guard, the aircraft is salvage. He told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel he might be paid by the insurance company for locating the wreckage.
