USMC Harrier Returns For AirVenture

Time to Practice Some Slow Flight

The US Marine Corps returns to Oshkosh this year for AirVenture flying the AV-8B "Harrier II" jump jet. The Harrier is a unique aircraft capable of vertical takeoffs and landings, and can even hover.

Although it's not the fastest aircraft the Marines have, its ability to take off from small fields close to the front lines has made the Harrier very popular. They always put on a great show, amazing the crowd as they rise, dip and spin the aircraft along the flightline.

The Harrier is scheduled to demonstrate its abilities during the afternoon air shows on Friday to Sunday July 29th to 31st. The Harrier is a multi-purpose fighter used for combat air support, combat air patrols, and other missions critical to the Marines on the ground.

The Marines have used the Harrier II since 1985, and the upgraded AV-8B II Plus model since 1993. The aircraft is much improved over the original British Harrier, with more power and carrying capability.
