Aero-TV: Comparison Shopping LSAs -- Tips On Approaching Your Buying Decision

An ANN Editor Assumes The Role Of Potential LSA Buyer/Pilot

In the LSA arena, there are literally dozens of choices. So many, in fact, that just getting started can be a little daunting.

This January at the U.S. Light Sport Expo in Sebring, the models and types ran the gamut from flexible-wing trikes and autogyros to kitplanes of nearly every description and factory-built models that can hold their own against production aircraft costing thousands of dollars more.

So once you've made a decision to dip your toe into that pool, where should you start? News Editor Tom Patton took the opportunity at Sebring to fly three different examples of the low-wing, tricycle gear airplanes that most appeal to him; the Bristell, the Vans RV-12 and the Zenith CH 650.

These flights were not approached as flight tests. Let's face it, most of us are not test pilots. Rather, these flights were done from the perspective of a potential buyer evaluating different aircraft from a fairly narrow range. If you gravitate toward high-wing airplanes or taildraggers, then that's where you should begin your journey.

Most important, though, is for you to do the homework that will help you narrow your choices ... and have fun in the process.
