USAF Awards SBIR To DeltaHawk

Multi-Application Hybrid-Electric Powerplant

DeltaHawk Engines, in collaboration with mangiX, announced it has received a Phase 1 Small Business Innovation Research award from AFWERX focused on the development of its Multi-Application Hybrid-Electric Powerplant for the U.S. Air Force.

Delta Hawk Engines will collaborate with magniX to create and provide innovative capabilities that will strengthen the national defense.

The Air Force Research Lab and AFWERX partnered up to streamline the SBIR and Small Business Technology Transfer process to accelerate small business development through faster proposal timelines and continually implementing process improvement changes in executing contracts. The program’s applicant pool has been expanded to include small businesses and cutting red tape.

The DeltaHawk-magniX collaboration benefited from the expanded range of innovations being funded by the program, which the Department of the Air Force began the Open Topic SBIR/STTR in 2018.

Christopher Ruud, CEO of DeltaHawk said, “DeltaHawk’s FAA-certified heavy fuel engine has achieved enormous inroads into the traditional aviation marketplace and is ideally suited to bring the same benefits to hybrid-electric aviation as well.  We are pleased to have been chosen to partner with AFWERX on this exciting project and help enhance our country's defense capabilities.”

DeltaHawk Engines is based in Racine, Wisconsin, and builds advanced-design FAA-certified jet-fueled piston engines for general aviation aircraft and hybrid power systems. The company holds numerous patents for its clean-sheet engine designs and its team is focused on building an entirely new generation of revolutionary piston engines.

magniX, in Everett, Washington, develops powertrains and batteries for electric aircraft. Its batteries provide a safe and practical solution for battery electric and hybrid electric aircraft as well as helicopters, eVTOLS, and marine craft.
