Florida Developer Will Ask FAA To Raise St. Pete Height Cap

Hopes To Put Up A 41-Story Building In The City

The FAA currently restricts building in the city of St. Petersburg, FL to 400 feet in height, but one developer in the region plans to petition the agency to raise that limit.

The Tampa Bay Business Journal relays a report from the Tampa Bay Times that identifies the Kolter Group as the developer that will explore the request. The firm hopes to build the "One St. Petersburg" project that would rise to 41 stories above the ground. The group has reportedly hired a consultant to advise it in how to best approach the FAA about the height cap.

One scenario would divert aircraft approaching Albert Whitted Airport (KSPG) over the water of Tampa Bay. Currently, the approach is over downtown.

Airport manager Richard Lesniak is reportedly on board with the plan. He told the paper it gives the airport a better approach, improves safety, and increases development opportunities in the city. "It appears to be a kind of win-win," he said.
