Former Presidential Helicopter Arrives At Nixon Library

"Most Photographed Helicopter In History" Now Home

A now-retired Sikorsky VH-3D Sea King helicopter that served four American presidents arrived Wednesday at the Richard M. Nixon Library & Birthplace in Yorba Linda, CA, where it will be permanently displayed as part of a public exhibition opening July 1.

As Aero-News first reported last November, the six-ton chopper was refurbished at March Air Force Base in Riverside County. It arrived at the museum earlier this week on a flatbed, sans rotorblades and doors -- prompting several non-paying gawkers to clamor along the sidewalk for a better look.

"We're going to put a 10-foot-high wall to surround it," said one museum official.

The helicopter once served Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford... even serving as President Nixon's Marine One during a tour of Vietnam's combat zone in 1969.

Perhaps its best known trip, however, came five years later... as the helicopter carried a disgraced but defiant Nixon away from the White House, after he resigned his presidency following the Watergate scandal (above).
