Lufthansa’s Vienna Dreamliner Sim Operational

First 787-9 For LAT Vienna Site

Lufthansa Aviation Training (LAT) announced it has put its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner Full Flight Simulator into service at its Vienna location on January 30, 2025, to complement the sim fleet with its first long-haul model at this location.

The operation of this unit expands LAT’s offering of state-of-the-art simulators in Austria while also bolstering pilot training for Austrian Airlines with the latest sim technology.

The Dreamliner simulator is one of CAE’s 7000XR series that meets the highest Level D certification standards and provides realistic training for all flight conditions of the Boeing 787-9. Planning for this addition began with a collaboration between LAT and Austrian Airlines in 2023. Following an evaluation period for a suitable manufacturer, the decision was made to go with Canada-based CAE.

The specific requirements were developed and implemented with CAE, and the FFA was accepted in July 2024 together with technicians from LAT and a pilot from Austrian Airlines at the assembly facility in Montreal. Installation in the Vienna facility and extensive testing were conducted from September to December 2024.

The simulator was introduced on January 20, 2025, at an opening ceremony at the training center attended by invited guests. The simulator was officially inaugurated by Matthias Spohr, Managing Director of LAT, along with Austrian Airlines COO Francesco Sciortino, in the presence of LAT customers and Austrian Airlines guests.

Spohr said, “The commissioning of the 787 Full Flight Simulator at Vienna Airport is a significant step in enabling Austrian Airlines to train at the highest level at their home base. I am very pleased that with this project, we can now provide our colleagues at Austrian and other LAT customers with one of our most modern long-haul simulators in the Austrian capital. With this expansion in pilot training, we at LAT are continuing to implement our strategic approach to offering optimal training close to our customers.”
