Washington Airport Installing State’s Largest Solar Array

Energy Generated Will Offset Large Portion of Airport’s Utility Cost

Washington Municipal Airport (KAWO) in Arlington, Washington, is partnering with Phoenix, Arizona,-based Veregy to design and install a state-of-the-art series of solar arrays that will generate about 145,000 kWh of electricity annually. 

The project features a combination of rooftop solar arrays on the airport’s terminal building as well as solar-covered car canopies that will produce 87.5 kW of DC power beginning July 8, 2024.

The cost of the project is about $668,000, of which $250,000 came from a Washington State Department of Transportation aviation grant. Another 30% reduction of the project cost will be realized through energy investment tax credits from the federal government. The generated energy will significantly reduce utility costs for the airport, and is the largest solar array at a general aviation airport in the state of Washington. The implementation of the solar array places KAWO among the leaders in sustainability and cost savings within the aviation industry.

Marty Wray, Director of Arlington Municipal Airport said, “We’re very excited to bring this project to fruition with Veregy. The savings over time will be extraordinary for the airport, for our tenants, and for users alike, in addition to the city.” 

“Veregy is excited to partner with the KAWO Airport to provide the largest solar array for a general aviation airport in the State of Washington,” said Corey Harper, an account executive with Veregy.
