Challenger LSA Down In Kansas

Pilot Sustained Minor Injuries In The Accident

A Challenger LSA went down last Wednesday near Emporia, KS, but the pilot walked away with only minor injuries.

The 82-year-old pilot, James Zerkel, lives near Joplin, MO, according to a report appearing in the Emporia Gazette. He had departed Herington Regional Airport (KHDU) in Morris County, KS for a return trip to Joplin when the accident occurred. Kansas Highway Patrol Master Trooper Chris Markham of Troop G said the accident appeared to have been caused by a "mechanical failure."

The plane went down in a creek near a county road. The paper reports that Zerkel was able to get clear of the wreckage and walk to U.S. Highway 50. He was treated by EMT's from the Emporia Fire Department, and sought additional medical attention on his own.

The Challenger LSA is a two-place SportPlane that the company says can cruise up to 95 miles per hour.
