American Eagle Reportedly Furloughing 50 Pilots

Move Is The Result Of Airline's Idling Of Nine Aircraft

A decision by American Eagle to idle nine of its airplanes will result in the furlough of 50 pilots, the carrier said in a message to employees.

Company president and CEO Dan Garton issued the memo last Thursday, according to the Dallas Business Journal. In it, he said the airline's 50 most junior pilots would be furloughed, as the carrier now has more pilots than planes for them to fly. Barton called the move "regrettable" but necessary "in the competitive business we are in." The furloughs will begin April 5th.

The airline said it plans to park the nine ATR regional airliners beginning in May. Garton said displacement bids for pilots and FAs will be posted "soon" in an effort to "balance staffing levels" with the new schedule.

American Eagle is owned by AMR Corp., which is working to re-organize under Chapter 11 bankruptcy laws. The paper reports the regional carrier is still working on its reorganization plan.
