Lift off: International Space University Program Opens In Adelaide

Five-Week Program Runs Through Early February

The International Space University (ISU), Strasbourg, France and the University of South Australia in Adelaide, Australia have joined forces again, kicking off the fourth Southern Hemisphere Summer Space Program (SHS-SP) in Adelaide this week. Running from January 6 until February 7, SHS-SP is an intensive five-week space education program, bringing together 35 students from nine countries and 44 staff and lecturers from 11 countries.

During the program, students will attend lectures on topics ranging from space tourism to space law. They will also participate in a number of workshops, field trips and industry events. At the same time, the students will be working towards developing a White Paper on Space Technologies for Improved Disaster Management: Emerging Tools for the Global South.

“The SHS-SP is a great program and a vital part of ISU’s goal of being the world’s leading space institution," said ISU Dean and Vice President, Dr. Angie Bukley. "We are thrilled to be back again in Adelaide and look forward to a very successful program."

Members of the public will also have the chance to learn from some of the world’s leading space experts with four public lectures taking place over the course of SHS-SP. The first public lecture – the International Astronaut Event – will take place this Thursday, with Adelaide’s first and only person in space, Andy Thomas, and internationally renowned Italian astronaut Paolo Nespoli. "The format of the event is designed to be highly interactive. Audiences will have the opportunity to hear first-hand what it is like to live and work in space,” says co-director of SHS-SP, Michael Davis.

While this is only the fourth time the international space education program has been held in Adelaide, ISU was founded in 1987 and is dedicated to international cooperation, collaboration and open, scholarly pursuits related to outer space exploration and development. It is the world’s leading international space institution and is supported by the world's space leading agencies and aerospace organizations.
