Michigan, Ontario Building Aerial Mobility Corridor

Joint Infrastructure for Commercial Drone Deployments Across the Border

Michigan has announced the development of a multifaceted program to boost the development of advanced aerial mobility in the region, beginning a study on effective utilization of UAV, UAS, and AAM tech throughout the economy. The first study to complete will analyze the effect of an international cross-border skyway with nearby Ontario, as well as commercial drone use.

The advanced air mobility market has seen significant strides in recent months, as those capable of reading the writing on the wall have struck out early to stake a claim. The bonanza of sustainable, vertical takeoff, and unmanned commercial aircraft is in its infancy, with a smattering of possible outcomes riding on the projects put into motion today. Some state governments believe the time is now to start laying the groundwork, with earlier adopters creating the infrastructure needed to establish operations under their purview. Michigan's new program aims to lay the foundation for commercial drone skyways over three proposed areas, bridging the gap between the state with Ontario, Canada. The state's strong history as an economic center of manufacturing and development make it a solid entry point as the aerial mobility industry writes the book on AAM methods and procedures. 

"Cross-border partnership is critical across all dimensions of mobility, including aerial systems. Michigan and Ontario have a rich history of partnering on groundbreaking innovations and this project by Air Space Link continues that tradition," said Gov. Whitmer. "Considering the density of auto suppliers, logistic companies, technology start-ups, and consumers in the region, it is a natural fit to test this cutting-edge aerial technology here. The vital research could lead to faster product deliveries and reduced supply chain disruptions in the future, helping us grow Michigan's economy and put Michiganders first."

The Michigan Department of Transportation, the Aeronautics Commission, and a smattering of additional acronymic organizations, departments, and teams will begin with a feasibility study, testing the viability of beyond-line-of-sight drone operations and commercial eVTOL flight for just-in-time delivery, medical transport, or cargo transportation. Their findings will help to guide businesses and authorities looking to build a lasting aeronautical base in the state. 

"We know the future of mobility is more than just vehicles - it is on air, land and sea," said Chief Mobility Officer Trevor Pawl, OFME. "Michigan is uniquely positioned to study, test and deploy the technologies that will lead to more affordable, accessible transportation solutions and are proud to continue to build on our strong relationship with Ontario to take a collaborative, innovative approach to these efforts."
