The 2003-04 recipients of the Joseph (Joe) F. Vorbeck Memorial Scholarship have been announced. Second-year aviation students Stacy Biernacki and Eric Francis both received Vorbeck scholarships in the amount of $5,000 that will be used toward their pilot training. "Training for a career as a professional aviator requires a considerable commitment, both in time and money," remarked Sporty’s Founder/Chairman Hal Shevers. "We hope these scholarships for second-year aviation students will allow them to focus their efforts entirely into training."

The Vorbeck Scholarship is given annually to two outstanding second-year aviation students enrolled in the Aviation Technology: Professional Pilot Training Program at the University of Cincinnati in memory of Joe Vorbeck. Vorbeck was a dedicated aviation educator at the University of Illinois and Purdue University. Joe enjoyed great success in the early 1960s, joining with Hal Shevers in pioneering the three-day groundschool concept.

Joe and Hal continued their partnership in 1987 co-founding Sporty's Academy. At Sporty’s Academy Joe developed the Professional Pilot Training Program at UC and was elected to the Flight Instructor Hall of Fame in 1998.

Sporty’s Academy, in partnership with the University of Cincinnati, administers the Aviation Technology: Professional Pilot Training Program providing instructors, aircraft, facilities, and training curriculum for use in the program.
