Beyond Aero Achieves Full-Scale Hydrogen-Electric Power

BYA-1 Hydrogen-Electric Biz-Jet is On-Track to Hit the Market in the Early 2030s

Beyond Aero is getting closer to rolling out its green-powered business jets, reaching Technology Readiness Level 6 (TRL6) for its hydrogen-electric propulsion system. The full-scale power testing keeps the company on track to roll out its BYA-1 aircraft in the early 2030s.

The company’s new test facility in Toulouse, France, was used to demonstrate the system in a realistic environment. The lab allows engineers to test power levels, fuel storage, and safety systems under operating conditions similar to what the aircraft will face in service. With the successful campaign, Beyond Aero can begin the transition from lab experiments to industrial-scale readiness.

The milestone comes after “18 months of relentless teamwork, powered by an environment where ambition is matched by rigor and where every achievement is the result of collective determination,” according to CEO Eloa Guillotin. “Leading such a talented, diverse, and purpose-driven team is both an honor and a responsibility.”

Beyond Aero’s progress has been strengthened by the acquisition of assets and data from hydrogen flight pioneer Universal Hydrogen. The deal included patents, test results, and experienced staff, which the company admits helped accelerate its program and reduce risks as it nears certification.

Several well-known aerospace suppliers have partnered with Beyond Aero along the way, ranging from fuel cell developers to power electronics firms to testing specialists. These collaborators have put in their two cents to ensure the propulsion system meets strict safety and performance standards.

On the regulatory front, Beyond Aero has already engaged with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency through the early application process. Developing a relationship with EASA at this stage allows the company to align its testing with certification requirements and to address potential safety questions before the aircraft enters formal review.

The BYA-1 is a small business jet that targets a six-passenger capacity for trips up to 800 nautical miles. While shorter than the traditional biz-jets we’re used to, that range is roughly five times greater than today’s battery-electric aircraft, making it a practical alternative for regional travel.
