Russia Threatens Cancellation Of Boeing 737 Airworthiness Certificate

Follows Accident Involving Flydubai Aircraft

Russian media is reporting that the Russian Federal Agency for Air Transport (Rosaviatsia) is considering the cancellation of the airworthiness certificate of the Boeing 737 following an accident in Southern Russia.

The website bidnessect.com relays a report from the Russian media outlet Sputnik which says the Russian Civic Chamber committee has expressed concerns about the airworthiness of the 737 to Rosaviatsiya and the IAC after the March 19 accident. The appeal also calls on regulatory officials to work with the IATA and Boeing to confirm that the 737 meets safety standards.

The IAC reportedly had recommended that the 737 not be flown following an accident involving one of the aircraft belonging to Tatarstan Airlines in 2013. That accident investigation focused on the rudder system of the airplane.

In the March 19 accident, the Flydubai 737 had been circling  Russia’s Rostov-on-Don airport for more than two hours waiting for a break in the weather. It impacted terrain on its second landing attempt.

Flydubai has said it intends to continue flying the 737, and will not cancel any orders for the airplane. Sputnik reports that Russian airlines currently operate more than 190 737s on domestic routes.
