Airborne 05.10.19: Dornier Seawings, King Air Autothrottle, N9M Report

Also: Afghan Pilot Training Shutdown, New Presidential Heli, WestJet Ratifies, Jet Aviation Acquires

Dornier Seawings is introducing a new product line purely for governmental operators: the Orca, which the company says will be the world’s most advanced amphibious mission platform.

The Orca is based on the Seastar, with the same features and advantages but optional internal and external mission equipment stations. The main concept of the Orca is to enhance typical maritime security missions, while merging seaborne and airborne operations. The FAA has awarded an STC to Innovative Solutions & Support for its patented ThrustSense Autothrottle for retrofit in the King Air. ThrustSense is a full regime autothrottle, from takeoff to landing phases of flight, including go-around, that allows the pilot to automatically control the power setting of the engine. ThrustSense computes and controls appropriate power levels reducing pilot workload. The NTSB has released its preliminary report from an accident involving the only known airworthy example of a Northrop N9M which went down April 22 near Norco, CA. The airplane was destroyed when it impacted the outpatient housing yard of the California Rehabilitation Center. The airline transport pilot was fatally injured. The airplane was registered to and operated by the Planes of Fame Air Museum. The local flight originated from the Chino Airport, Chino, California, about 1202 local time. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
