Ontario International Wraps Up Runway Rehab Project

Nearly 80,000 Square Yards of Runway 8R-26L Repaved

As of October 2, Ontario International Airport (ONT) in Southern California has completed its $90 million runway improvement project. This replaced and renovated the field’s infrastructure to improve safety for its travelers.

The project initially opened in February 2023 and resumed for Year 2 this February. 80,000 square yards of ONT’s southernmost runway, 8R-26L, were repaved. Adjacent taxiways also received an upgrade, with two being removed and one (S8) being constructed. LED lighting was installed for improved visibility.

$67 million of the $90 million total project cost was covered by the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Airport Improvement Program (AIP). The remaining $23 million was funded by ONT airport operations revenues. Last month, ONT was awarded $4 million in additional AIP funding for its  Runway 8L-26R Rehabilitation, east of Taxiway U project design.

“We want to thank Congresswoman Norma Torres, our elected leadership in Washington, D.C., and our regulatory partners for their tireless efforts in securing the funding needed to bring this important project to conclusion,” commented Alan D. Wapner, president of the Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA) Board of Commissioners. “Their unwavering support of Ontario International Airport has allowed us to address critical needs, invest in airport operations, and create an unparalleled travel experience for one of the most vibrant population and economic centers in the United States.”

These runway renovations follow 42 months of consecutive passenger growth. ONT is set to blow past the 7 million traveler mark this year; a 75% increase since its transition from Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) to City of Ontario ownership in 2016.

“We appreciate all of the support we have received, from our Congressional leaders, our airline and business partners, and, of course, this dynamic region we serve,” expressed OIAA CEO Atif Elkadi.”It is an honor, too, to be able to fulfill the vision, passion, and commitment of our Board of Commissioners as we connect the world to the Inland Empire – the new heart of Southern California.”
