Italian ATC Controllers Strike

Four-hour strike shuts down Italian airspace on Friday

If you thought that the US was the only country dealing with problematic issues related to its air traffic controllers, think again. Italian air traffic controllers went on strike for four hours on Friday, starting at noon local time (1100 GMT).

The effects of the strike were felt immediately. Alitalia cancelled 172 flights; 78 domestic and 94 international. Several other flights had to be rescheduled. Lufthansa cancelled 44 out of 80 flights between Italy and Germany. The company told CNN, however, that attempts would be made to accommodate approximately 2,500 stranded passengers on larger aircraft on the remaining 36 flights scheduled to and from Italy.

Nicoletta Tomiselli, spokesperson for Italy's air traffic control agency ENAV, told CNN the controllers are upset about plans to create a single, unified ATC agency based in Vienna, and are afraid that some of their union members will lose their jobs as a result.
