Airport Congestion Problems Addressed By New LMC Software Suite

Company Says System Supports A Fully Collaborative Air Traffic Management Environment

Lockheed Martin has rolled out a comprehensive set of decision support tools it calls The Logic Suite that helps connect more passengers to their flights, reduces surface congestion at airports and lowers operating costs for airlines.

"Major U.S. airports are plagued by long lines of aircraft awaiting takeoff due to a lack of collaboration between airlines, air traffic control and airport control towers – resulting in excess fuel burn, emissions and occasional nightmare delays on the tarmac for travelers and crew alike," said Sandy Samuel, vice president of Transportation Solutions at Lockheed Martin Information Systems & Global Solutions (IS&GS)-Civil division. "The Logic Suite fosters common situational awareness across the traditional lines of responsibility, enabling better efficiency on the tarmac and in flight – and creating a better flying experience for the public."

The Logic Suite is comprised of:

  • Ramp Logic forecasts when an aircraft is ready to depart. It also analyzes and predicts passenger and baggage connections, and aircraft taxi times.
  • Departure Logic allocates airline departure slots based on runway availability and air traffic constraints.  This enables airlines to manage their departure queues at the gate instead of lining up on the tarmac.
  • Flight Logic allows airlines to perform a risk analysis of a flight plan based on current and potential future restrictions (i.e., weather delays) in the National Airspace (NAS).
  • Flow Logic enables collaborative traffic flow management – improving the overall efficiency of the airspace and minimizing the impact of congestion and weather.
  • The Logic Suite's development was initiated at a major hub airport, with a focus on Ramp Logic, to assure real world utility.  The solution is now available for purchase by airlines and airports.

Lockheed Martin has supported the FAA for more than 50 years. The IS&GS-Civil division serves various non-defense U.S. government agencies, international governments and regulated commercial industries. It is responsible for a wide array of information technology systems and services in areas including transportation, health care, energy, information and cyber security, extreme environments, citizen protection and space exploration.
