Russia Plans New $790 Million Spaceport

Kazakhstan Site Dates Back To The Soviet Era

The Russian government said Monday that it plans to set aside the equivalent of $790 million to build a new spaceport, which would give the country a launch facility of its own.

Russia currently rents the Baikonur spaceport from its neighbor, and former SSR, Kazakhstan. The new spaceport would be built near the port city of Vostochny. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said the money would be spent over the next three years to get construction underway for the new cosomdrome.

Fox News reports that Putin expects that Vostochny will be Russia's first cosmodrome for civilian use, and that he said in a speech at the Energia Rocket and Space Corporation that it will "guarantee Russia full independence of space activities."

Putin said it is important that Vostochy "effectively ensure the operation of all promising space projects," including planned interplanetary flights."
