Mitchell Institute To Release Analysis Of USAF Aircraft Inventory

First Comprehensive Listing Of Aircraft Numbers Over The Last 60 Years

Dr. Rebecca Grant, Director of the Mitchell Institute for Airpower Studies, recently announced the publication of a Mitchell study, "Downsizing USAF: A 60-Year Analysis of Air Force Aircraft Inventory." A database of the full aircraft inventory of the Air Force will be released for the first time next week.

This report illustrates force structure trends for USAF aircraft and helicopters covering the years 1950 to 2009. The report's authors will also discuss implications for future defense budgets and programs during a presentation coinciding with the release.

"Downsizing USAF: A 60-Year Analysis of Air Force Aircraft Inventory" will be released at 0930, November 10, 2010, at the Air Force Association's national headquarters in Arlington, Va. Dr. Grant will present the report with the following speakers:

  • James C. Ruehrmund Jr., retired Air Force Reserve colonel. Ruehrmund holds masters' degrees in history and business administration and is currently employed by Deloitte Consulting.
  • Christopher J. Bowie , Corporate Director of the Northrop Grumman Analysis Center.  Bowie holds a doctorate in history from Oxford University and has held a variety of positions at the RAND Corporation, the Air Staff and Northrop Grumman Corporation.

Rebecca Grant is an air, space, and cyber power analyst with 20 years of experience in Washington, D.C. In the early 1990s, she worked in the operations group of the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, for the Secretary of the Air Force and for RAND Corp. Among her Mitchell Institute titles are: The War of 9/11 (2005); Losing Air Dominance (2008); The Tanker Imperative (2009); and Radar Game and Value of Stealth (2010). Dr. Grant received a B.A. from Wellesley College in 1985 and a PhD in international relations from the London School of Economics in 1989.
