Aero-TV: Kitfox Celebrates 40th Anniversary

Company Back to Its Roots With New Designs

Kitfox Aircraft celebrated its 40th anniversary at the same spot it all began: EAA’s Oshkosh AirVenture. Introduced in 1984, the Kitfox is a beloved two-seater known for ease of assembly, an impressive safety record, and a fun flight experience. 7 series and over 7,000 kit deliveries later, Kitfox aircraft are bigger, faster, and sportier than ever.

Reflecting on the kit’s Oshkosh debut, Kitfox President and CEO John McBean commented: “Everybody thought, he's gonna stall it and spin it, and it just continued climbing. And we’ve never looked back.”

The latest generation of Kitfox designs, including the Speedster, STI, and Super Sport, are giving customers what they asked for: performance. The Rotax 916 iS is now installed on the Super Sport kit, adding a 20 hp and 10% efficiency boost from the previous 915 model.

With MOSAIC not yet in place, Kitfox is in the process of moving away from factory-built S-LSAs. Instead, it is attempting to introduce a factory assist build program, allowing customers to work with Kitfox staff to assemble and learn more about their aircraft.

Despite these upgrades, Kitfox intends to maintain the classic characteristics of its earlier aircraft.

“We’re going to stay status quo. We try not to reach out beyond our envelope. We like what we have, it settles in nice,” continued McBean. “It’s probably one of the most versatile aircraft out there in its class, and yet with great performance.”
