American Airlines Switching From Gogo To ViaSat On Over 500 Aircraft

Will Make Faster Internet Available Beginning Next Year

American Airlines is switching from Gogo to ViaSat for its Internet connectivity on over 500 airplanes beginning next year.

The move to ViaSat will allow American to offer faster Internet services delivered by satellite than is available from Gogos KU-band terrestrial service. It will also give users access to Netflix and YouTube, which is not available through Gogo.

Engadget relays a report from Bloomberg indicating that American recently sued Gogo over its slow internet speeds, but later dropped the suit. And it's not a complete divorce. The carrier still has plans to equip 130 aircraft with Gogo's 2Ku satellite service. While it called Gogo a "valued partner", it said it could still drop Gogo entirely if the satellite service does not perform as advertised.

Gogo called the announcement "old news," saying it had already notified investors that it was going to be dropped from many American flights in favor of the satellite service.
