NORAD Fighters Intercept Civilian Aircraft After Comm Foul-Up

Flight Was NORDO From Chicago To Near Denver

Two F-16 fighter aircraft under the direction of North American Aerospace Defense Command intercepted a civilian aircraft that was out of radio communications at approximately 1700 MDT Thursday.

The aircraft landed without incident at Centennial Airport, which is located near Denver, CO. The pilot was met by local and federal authorities.

Television station KMGH in Denver reports that, according to NORAD, the flight originated in Pittsburgh, and refueled in Chicago before proceeding to Denver on Thursday. FBI spokesman Dave Joly told the station that the incident was a case of miscommunication. The pilot was reportedly not given the proper frequency to use after leaving Chicago, making the aircraft NORDO for that portion of the flight. The FAA said communications were re-established before the pilot landed at Centennial airport in Denver.
