Postal Service Shows Wright Stuff at AirVenture

Unveils First Flight Commemorative Stamp Paying Tribute To Wright Brothers

By ANN Correspondent Juan Jimenez

The US Postal Service showed its First Flight Commemorative Stamp at the Countdown to Kitty Hawk Pavilion at AirVenture this past week and further recognized the importance of one of aviation's most amazing airshows.

The stamp, first unveiled on March 22 in simultaneous events in Dayton, Ohio and Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, was presented to the public at the Pavilion by Greg Robinson, Postmaster, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, along with EAA Airshow Announcer Bill Bordeleau, EAA Museum Director Adam Smith, EAA Media and Public Relations Director Dick Knapinski.

Joining the presentation ceremony for the dedication were Danny Jackson, USPS Vice President of Operations for the Great Lakes Area; Bill Mitchell, District Manager for the Lakeland Cluster of the USPS and Randal Dietrich, Executive Director of EAA's Countdown to Kitty Hawk program.

The stamp, designed by McRay Magleby of Provo, Utah, depicts Orville Wright at the controls of the 1903 Wright Flyer at Kitty Hawk/Kill Devil Hills on December 17. The unveiling of the stamp also marked the availability of cancellations at the Oshkosh EAA Convention Station. Stamp collectors who also shared a love of aviation appreciated the fact that this cancellation was only available during the show, which will most likely make this item a true collector's piece not just for stamp collectors, but for aviation historians and enthusiasts in general.
