ANA, Joby Form JV For Air Taxi Ops In Japan

Demo Flights of Joby eVTOL Aircraft At EXPO 2025 In Osaka

ANA Holdings and Joby Aviation announced the expansion of their collaboration to begin commercial air taxi service in Japan. The companies will establish a joint venture to deploy more than 100 Joby eVTOL aircraft in a new air taxi ecosystem in Japan.

The JV will focus on starting a phased rollout of operations in Tokyo and then accelerate the transformation of urban air mobility across the region and the country. The two companies will also develop the ecosystem needed for implementation: vertiports, pilot training programs, and aircraft maintenance operations.

Koji Shibata, President and CEO of ANA HD said, “Our expanded partnership with Joby, a company with exceptional technology and vision, represents a pivotal step forward. Air taxi service will directly contribute to addressing Japan’s urban transportation difficulties, ultimately enhancing regional exchange and providing a new, efficient means of travel.

“Demonstration flights at the Expo are the first step in addressing that challenge. Alongside our partners, we are dedicated to building this future while adhering to the highest safety standards developed by the ANA Group.”

JoeBen Bevirt, Founder and CEO of Joby Aviation said, “Where ancient wisdom, legendary craftsmanship and soaring ambition converge—that's Japan. And that makes it an extraordinary launchpad for redefining the future of air mobility. Our vision is bold: to build new pathways in the skies and reimagine everyday life. Together with ANA, we’re setting a foundation to do just that—to deliver Joby aircraft and build an entire air transport ecosystem woven into Japan’s vibrant cities.”

Joby’s eVTOL aircraft take off vertically, then transition to horizontal wing-borne flight during cruise, then transition back to vertical flight to land like a helicopter at the destination. This is all  completed with a minimal acoustic impact and zero emissions. The aircraft is designed to carry the pilot and up to four passengers at speeds up to 200 mph.
