A Third TSA Employee Reported The Theft
Two TSA agents assigned to security at Kennedy International
Airport have been arrested on charges of stealing $40,000 from
a piece of checked luggage. The bag reportedly contained $170,000
cash.
The two agents ... 44 year old Persad Coumar and 30 year old
Davon Webb ... have been charged with grand larceny, possession of
stolen property, conspiracy, and official misconduct. The two had
split the money, with Mr. Coumar taking $26,000 and Mr. Webb taking
$14,000, according to a report in the New York Times. All
but $20 was recovered, which Mr. Coumar said he had used to buy
food.
The Port Authority worked with TSA to catch the pair. In a
statement, a TSA spokesman said the agency has a zero tolerance
policy for theft in the workplace. "TSA is working closely with law
enforcement authorities to ensure the individuals responsible are
prosecuted and we will move swiftly and decisively to end the
federal careers of any employee who engages in illegal activity on
the job,” the statement said.
Bloomberg News reports that the two will be terminated
from their jobs with the security agency.
The two men allegedly worked together to steal the money after
Courmar saw the cash in the bag when it went through an x-ray
machine before being placed on an American Airlines flight. Webb
was working in the baggage area, and he marked the bag with tape.
Courmar then entered the baggage area using his TSA ID, found the
bag and took some of the money, which was later discovered at the
homes of the two suspects.
