Government Contemplates Laser Warnings

NORAD Could Point That Next Laser At Your Plane

Pop Quiz: What do you get when you accidentally fly into restricted airspace?

A) Dirty looks
B) A stern call on the radio
C) A military escort
D) All of the above

Well, here's a new possibility:

E) A laser beam in the face

NORAD has been looking into the use of lasers to warn pilots they're flying somewhere they shouldn't be. The alternating red and green beam of light would initially be used in the Washington ADIZ and NORAD promises that, unlike lasers that have been beamed at pilots lately, these are eye-safe.

Steve Luckey, who chairs the ALPA's national security committee, called the warning system "a step in the right direction -- as long as they can show they're prudent or safe."

We'll keep an eye on this story.
