Small Plane Down On Catalina Island Off CA Coast

Pilot Reported Symptoms Associated With A Heart Attack

A Cessna 182P went down about two miles short of the Catalina Airport in the Sky (KAVX) runway after the pilot reported he was possibly suffering a heart attack. He was fatally injured in the accident, though it has not been determined whether the impact or his medical condition was the cause.

According to LA County Sheriff's spokesman Jeff Donahue, the pilot was the only person aboard the aircraft when it went down about 1300 PDT. The pilot had radioed the airport saying that he was having chest pains which could indicate a heart attack. He told controllers he did not think he could reach the runway.

The Associated Press reports that the crash sparked a brush fire that burned about 20 acres. The airport is situated at an elevation of about 1,600 feet in the mountains, which made getting to the wreckage difficult. It took fire crews about three hours to reach the crash site.
