NASA Aims For Manned Mars Landing In 2037

From Earth To The ISS, Then Moon, And Beyond

Applying a little reverse math to a recent statement by NASA administrator Michael Griffin, it appears the agency has a goal of landing a man on Mars by 2037.

Griffin was addressing an international astronautics congress in Hyderabad, India to mark the half-century anniversary of Sputnik. He told the gathering that on Sputnik's 100th anniversary in 2057, he expects we'll be celebrating the 20th anniversary on man's first landing on Mars.

The administrator added that to get there, NASA must complete work on the International Space Station -- scheduled for 2010 -- and send manned flights back to the moon, as well.

"We are looking at the moon and Mars to build a civilization for tomorrow and after that," Griffin said.

The prediction, of course, assumes that the Dawn space probe isn't still tying up NASA's launch facilities at Kennedy by 2037.
