US Military Denies Helicopter Went Down In Iraq

Search Effort Reveals No Evidence Of Wreckage, All Choppers Accounted For

It wasn't one of ours... that's the word from US military officials in Iraq, after an Iraqi soldier reported a helicopter had gone down from ground fire northeast of Baghdad, near Baquoba.

Maj. Steve Warren, a spokesman for the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, told the Associated Press an Iraqi soldier standing at a checkpoint saw a helicopter flying close to the ground, and believed it had impacted the ground.

The military dispatched search helicopters and ground crews in the area where the Iraqi, a member of the Diyala police force said he'd seen ground fire take down a US aircraft, but came up empty. The 101st Combat Aviation Brigade quickly took stock of its choppers in the area, and could account for all of its aircraft.

"There was no helicopter crash," said Warren.

Later, the Diyala police would only say an Iraqi soldier reported the downed helicopter, and that US forces were alerted.
