Navy Plans To Leave F-5N Jet At The Bottom Of The Ocean

Went Down Last Week During A Training Exercise In The Florida Keys

The Navy F-5N which went down last Wednesday in the Florida Keys is lying in 3,000 feet of water, and the Navy says it will very likely stay there.

The Navy Times reports that the aircraft went down during a training exercise about 20 miles southeast of Key West, FL. The pilot ejected and was rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard with no reported injuries.

While some of the airplane was recovered, most of it went to the bottom of the ocean in very deep water. Lt. Russ Chilcoat said in a news release that the Navy currently has no plans to recover the remainder of the airplane.

The pilot is attached to the Fighter Composite Squadron 111 "Sun Downers" based at Key West.
