New Alert Service Bulletin For Certain Rotax Engines

Inspection And Replacement Of Oil Spray Nozzle

Rotax announced an Alert Service Bulletin (ASB) for its Type 912i, 915i, and 916i series engines for inspection and/or replacement of the oil spray nozzle due to excessive application of Loktite during manufacture with possible blockage of the nozzle, leading to inadequate cooling and potential damage to the generators.

The Austria-based producer of engines for light sport aircraft (LSA) said the excessive Loctite was due to a ‘deviation in the manufacturing process’ and that this ASB has been updated to Mandatory because the failure mechanism has been re-evaluated and immediate action is required.

Actions required include:

  1. Review the list of serial numbers of affected engines provided in Chapter 4) Appendix of the certified ASB
  2. Determine if your engine is affected by checking the serial number of your engine against the list of affected engines
  3. Check for prior installation of the overhaul kits listed in the ASB

Rotax recommends that for any flights conducted prior to inspection of the spray nozzle, to verify the availability of the battery backup function.

The ASB stipulates that at the next scheduled maintenance, or at the latest within the next 25 hours of operating the aircraft, to perform the spray nozzle inspection as described in the ASB, or at the latest within one year from the initial issuance of the ASB.

The ASB further requires the inspection of the spray nozzle before initial installing the engine or spare parts, as well as on undelivered engines and spare parts.
