Flight 1939 Will Be The Last For The Carrier As A Unique Entity

By the time you read this, it's possible that US Airways will have landed its final flight. If you're reading it before 0618 EDT ... then the flight is still in the air.

US Airways Flight 1939 departed from San Francisco late Friday night and was scheduled to arrive in Philly at 0618 EDT. It is the last scheduled flight for US Airways in its own livery. The airline merged with American Airlines and the American brand was the survivor between the two, even though it was US Airways that rescued American from bankruptcy.

American had planned gate-side festivities at both airports, and passengers who boarded in San Francisco participated in a complimentary champagne toast.

On Saturday morning, the US Airways reservation system will go dark, and the airline's website will soon follow. US Airways branding has been removed from ticket counters and other areas of airports served by the airline, with a goal of having American branding up by Saturday morning.

There will still be a few glimpses of the airline, according to a report in USA Today. American says it will take until late next year to repaint all of its airplanes in American livery, and flight attendant uniforms will stay the same until a system-wide update sometime next year.

There are now just four major U.S. carriers; American, Delta, Southwest, and United.
