Marine Corps Tests Tiny Helicopter UAV

Pocket-Sized Drone Delivers Live Video Feeds From Three Cameras

The U.S. Marine Corps is conducting tests with the Black Hornet PD-100 helicopter drone that can deliver live video feeds from three cameras about a mile away.

The tiny helicopter's three cameras point forward, directly down, and one at 45 degrees. They can also capture still images. The aircraft can stay aloft for up to 25 minutes, and can fly autonomously.

PC World reports that the the tests were conducted at MIX-16 at Camp Pendleton, The tiny UAV has already been used in the field in Afghanistan by the British military. The U.K. MoD has made the aircraft a regular part of its military kit.

The Black Hornet is made by Norway's Prox Dynamics. A version with night-flying capability has been ordered by the Norwegian Special Forces.
