AeroSports Update: Model Airplanes Get A Special Day In Indiana

A Celebration In Muncie, Indiana On August 16 Will Recognize The Importance Of Model Aviation In The State And Around The U.S.

If you gathered the largest crowd at EAA AirVenture and asked all the recreational flyers who got their start in flying with model aviation to raise their hands, you would see thousands of arms pointed skyward.

The Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) said it is pleased to announce that the state of Indiana, led by Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, has declared August 16, 2014, as Model Aviation Day.

National Model Aviation Day has been established to celebrate the history of model aviation and to promote the hobby on a national scale. The Academy will celebrate Indiana Model Aviation Day at its national headquarters in Muncie, along with AMA chartered clubs across the country.

Each of the participating clubs will promote model aviation and the many benefits of participating in the hobby. This nationwide event will also serve as a fundraiser to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. This organization aims to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of injured service members.

More than 130 AMA chartered clubs have registered to participate and host local events, and dozens more are expected to sign up before the August 1 deadline. Several of the participating clubs come from Indiana. A participant map and information on specific events can be found on the website listed below.

The celebration at the national headquarters in Muncie IN will feature air shows, free admission to the National Model Aviation Museum, a children’s area with several activities, a large community sale where residents can sell items and shop, 5K race, and hands-on activities. Spectators can also visit the Hoosier Dawn Patrol where historical models will be on display.

The Academy of Model Aeronautics has been the nation’s collective voice for approximately 164,000 modelers in 2,400 clubs in every state and Puerto Rico since 1936. A nonprofit association headquartered in Muncie IN, AMA sanctions more than 2,000 events and competitions each year under the auspices of the National Aeronautic Association.
