The FAA has taken an important step to help improve safety in small aircraft by simplifying design approval requirements for angle of attack (AOA) indicators.

Under the new policy, manufacturers must build the AOA indicator system according to standards from the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and apply for FAA approval for the design via a letter certifying that the equipment meets ASTM standards and production quality is assured. The U.S. House Small Business Committee, held a hearing on Wednesday to examine how FAA policies affect small general aviation businesses. John Uczekaj, President and CEO of Aspen Avionics, Inc., testified on behalf of Aspen Avionics and GAMA. When there’s smoke in an airplane it’s a serious event. In this case of a jet charter flight from Canada, the pilot’s followed the appropriate procedures and donned their oxygen masks. The charter flight was carrying pop star Justin Bieber, his father, and an entourage of about 10 people. The source of the smoke is alleged to have been marijuana. Lots of it. All this... and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
