Megakopter Lifts Over 134 Pounds To Set Guinness Record

Aircraft Developed By Students At The University Of Oslo

A multi-rotor UAV developed by the University of Oslo recently set a Guinness World Record by lifting 61 kilograms, or just over 134 pounds, and held it for 37 seconds.

The UAV is called the "Megakopter". It has 13 rotors driven by 48 individual electric motors mounted on an aluminum and plywood frame. It was built at the Institute for informatics at University of Oslo by students.
According to the university website, the Megakopter is controlled by a pilot in the same way that a hobbyist quadcopter would be operated. The KK2 flight controller takes the input signals from the RX and converts them to signals the electronic speed controllers can process. The flight controller also has accelerometer and a gyro. These components makes the Megakopter stabilize.

The motors spin at around 10,000 rpm, and the combined motors generate 70k watts of power. The university claims the Megakopter is capable of lifting the weight of a human.

And as you can imagine, in the video that is included at the FMI link below, it sounds like a swarm of angry bees when it's flying.
