Racing Aircraft 'Hot Stuff' Involved In Runway Accident Won't Be Racing

Scratches The Airplane From National Air Race In Reno

The iconic World Cup winner and Formula 1 Air Racer "Hot Stuff", flown by Thom Richard will not be participating in the 2017 Reno Air Race Association's National Championships in Reno, NV or the Air Race 1 World Cup in Thailand 2017.

‘Hot Stuff’ was involved in a runway accident where it was struck from behind by another racer during the Gold heat at the National Championship final on September 18, 2016.

A little-known insurance clause has put a stop to the intended repairs, as the liability insurance participants must purchase does not cover damage to other participant’s aircraft. The only way to have insurance cover an aircraft during an air racing event is to purchase very expensive hull insurance for your own aircraft. That way, if someone else damages it, you will be covered.

The team does not have the budget to cover the repairs for 2017. But will try to bring the aircraft back to the circuit as soon as possible. Until then, the aircraft will be on display, in its damaged condition, at Warbird Adventures in Kissimmee, FL.

Many have asked if we plan to pursue legal action against the entities involved and the answer is no. Under no circumstances would we jeopardize the future of another race team, the class or the venue by tying them up in court without proper insurance coverage.

"Hot Stuff" will return in due course.
