The issue of providing a sustainable supply of Avgas for our piston powered aircraft is something that affects a major part of the general aviation fleet. To find out more about this, ANN News Editor, Tom Patton, took the opportunity at Sun ‘n Fun 2016 to talk with Chris D’Acosta, the CEO of Swift Fuels, LLC.
D’Acosta told Tom that they have been working on the Unleaded 94 MON Avgas alternative fuel for a couple of years and that they now have approval for it to be used on hundreds of aircraft makes and models.
The conversation really gets interesting when D’Acosta starts discussing the details about their UL94 and why it is quite different from automotive fuels. He describes some of the details involved in their formulation of the fuel and he compares it to automotive fuel. It’s an interesting comparison that makes you wonder if automotive fuel is a good idea at all.
While their UL94 fuel may not be used in aircraft that require 100 octane low lead avgas, Swift Fuels is working on a research program with the government on a fuel that will replace 100LL.
This video provides great background information about an important subject.
